Parent/Toddler

The goal of this class is to introduce your child to the water and gain comfortability. We will be practicing the fundamentals of swimming through singing songs and playing games. This class has an instructor guiding you and your child through the swimming class. We encourage all parents to have: closeness, skin contact, eye contact, smiles and enthusiasm with their little swimmers! This will help in gaining trust for the water.

What you should know…

Group lesson participants are required to check-in the first week only. Private lesson participants are required to check-in every week. On the first day of class please arrive on the pool deck about 5-minutes early for classes in order to meet your instructor and find out where in the pool your class will be. You will need to know what level you are enrolled in and what time it starts. Once on the pool deck, look for signs and the Aquatic Lead staff to direct you to where your class is. There will be an Aquatic Lead  available during lessons to answer any questions you might have.

Please plan enough time before your lesson to give your child a snack and use the bathroom. Lack of doing so can affect your child’s participation and can cause them to be cold in the water.

Due to a high demand of towels, we are not able to provide towels unless you are an Issaquah Fitness member. Please remember to bring your own towel when you attend swim lessons.

Please stay seated on the benches against the wall during group lessons. This is meant to benefit your child’s swim lessons as well as their peers. Minimizing their distractions helps the teacher build a relationship with them, and can also take away their “audience” if they are struggling in class. Please do not move the benches; they have been placed in specific locations to maintain fire/emergency evacuation standards.

If your child is crying during class, we ask that you do your best to remain seated or even move yourself out of your child’s line of sight. We may ask you to leave the pool area to help get your child engaged in class. If your child is struggling during class, we recommend you give them options before arriving at the pool. Option A: “This is what I need to see if you want mommy/daddy to stay and watch.” Option B: “If you can’t do these things, mommy/daddy will have to sit in the locker room until your class is over, but I will be right back when class is done.”

Parents and caretakers, please avoid the following:

  • Do not stare worriedly at your child from your seat
  • Do not offer bribes
  • Please do not feel guilty for your upset child, all of our instructors are trained to work with upset children
  • Do not stop lessons completely because your child cried in the beginning
  • Do not be scared for your child
  • Do not hold their hand, wipe their face or give extra attention when they are upset in class

Instead, what you can do:

  • Prepare your child for the swimming experience before arriving at the pool
  • Sing songs from swim lessons and use the same specific swimming vocabulary when at the pool or in the bath
  • Visit the pool before swim lessons to watch other classes
  • Constantly offer support before and after lessons (but not during, this could reinforce undesired behaviors)
  • Swim Suit
  • Goggles are allowed but not required for Preschool-Youth Levels
  • Goggles are required for Youth 5-6 Sharks class and for Pre-Competitive
  • Please be sure to bring your own towel as Issaquah Fitness has limited towels for swim lesson participants.
  • Flip flops, deck shoes, shower shoes – nice, but not necessary
  • Swim diaper with protective cover is required, if student is not potty trained
  • Group lesson participants are required to check-in the first week only. Private lesson participants are required to check-in every week.
  • Parents are asked to please sit on the benches and to not disrupt swim class. The instructor may ask you to leave the pool area for the swim lesson if they feel it will benefit your child’s lesson.
  • Children may not play/swim on the stairs before or after swim lessons unless it is family swim and their parent is in the water with them.

  • Swimmers must be 7 years or older to sit in the hot tub. Swimmers under the age of 3 years MAY NOT sit on the top stair OR put their feet in the hot tub. This is a Washington State health code violation. (During family swim times only)

  • If child is under 18, they must pass a swim test to be in pool without parent

If child passes swim test:

  • Between 8-17 years old, children must either pass a swim test or stand flat footed to be without a guardian. If the guardian is allowed to leave the pool deck, THEY MUST sign the Minor consent form.
  • Between 12 -17 years old (parent must communicate to Lifeguard, Front Desk or Aquatics Lead where the parent will be in case of an emergency). If a child under 17 doesn’t meet these criteria, a parent must be in the water and within arms reach.
  • Children under the age of 8, must have a parent on the pool deck at all times.

Parents are not allowed to leave the pool deck during swim lessons. To enjoy family swim after swim lessons, you must be an Issaquah Fitness member or have purchased a pass as an Arena Sports member. All children 8 years of age or older who have passed the swim test for Family Swim may have a parent/guardian 18 years of age or older sign them out on our “Minor Sign Out Sheet,” but you must stay in the facility. For all other rules and guidelines, please see our complete list located on our pool deck.

Please supervise your children in the locker rooms at all times. It is important to us that we are considerate of all members in the club. Placing belongings in lockers, picking up wet towels, respecting others’ privacy while they are changing can all contribute to this.

Group Lessons:

Make-ups are based on availability of your child’s current level, we do not allow makeup classes the first week of the session and must be made up during the current session they are enrolled in.  Make-ups are limited to one class per child per session you are signed up for and are not guaranteed.

Private/Semi-Private Lessons:

Make-ups for privates are dependent on both the availability of the instructor as well as the student. We allow one make-up per session and notice must be given to the instructor 24 hours in advance, no guarantee.
